Every minute of every day is accounted for, so much that it is quite often a thrash to depart for a dirt track at my originally intended hour. However, much to the benefit of my blood pressure, that return home is a completely opposite experience. Calmed and content after the satisfaction of my racing fix, the pace is much more relaxed. With satellite radio serving as my highway companion, I continuously toggle through my favorite stations in search of long-lost gems. Alertly scanning the edges of the road for the gleaming eyes of wildlife and the occasional cop, the goal is always to get home with as little drama as possible. And as is the case when the end of the season becomes all too apparent, there is an unfulfilled wish that these evening excursions may never come to an end.

Archbishop Desmond Tutu and the other Nobel laureates protest in the letter that the show, Stars Earn Stripes, glorifies war and armed violence. The series, which premiered on NBC on Monday night, pairs celebrities with US military personnel for simulated military challenges. The programme is hosted by retired army general Wesley Clark. The series is billed on its website as a “fast-paced competition” whose contestants “will gather at a remote training facility where they will be challenged to execute complicated missions inspired by real military exercises”.
Stars Earn Stripes says it “pays homage to the men and women who serve in the US armed forces and our first-responder services”. The letter, sent on Monday to Clark, NBC boss Robert Greenblatt, producer Mark Burnett and others connected with the show, argues “this programme pays homage to no one anywhere” and criticises it for “trying to somehow sanitise war by likening it to an athletic competition”.
The letter calls on NBC to stop airing the series. The broadcaster defended the show, saying it wasn’t “a glorification of war, but a glorification of service”.

While the money that contestants win does go to veterans’ charities in the end, the idea that this show honors anyone is laughable. But even the physical obstacles these celebrities are asked to endure come nowhere close to the physical, emotional, and psychological struggles of being trained in the military, let alone being in a combat situation. Todd Palin is actually going to be allowed to get shot on a TV show.
More backlash against the show has come from several Nobel Peace Prize winners who penned an open letter berating the show for glamorizing war and reducing it to a game, and calling for the show’s cancellation. While war is often glorified in TV and movies from Top Gun to The A-Team, a reality television show takes this glorification one step further, shifting from promoting war in the form of a fictional or semi-fictional story to actually trying to parade itself as the real experience.
Any movies and shows that seek to portray the brutality and harsh reality of war are not films that are really entertaining to watch, and with a prime-time audience to please, it’s not surprising that NBC makes no attempts to convey reality accurately.
